Safety nets and what they do not cover

Updated 2026-10-28 · 3 min read

Money in a bank account is covered by the Dutch deposit guarantee scheme up to €100,000 per person per bank. If a licensed investment firm fails, an investor compensation scheme can cover limited amounts, but only in specific situations.

Neither scheme covers ordinary market losses. If your fund falls in value because markets fall, that is the risk you accepted.

Build a buffer of several months of expenses before you invest, and only invest money you will not need for years. Workplace pensions and other pension products are a separate topic with their own rules.
