Investing basics, the Dutch way

Updated 2026-10-28 · 3 min read

A share is a small stake in a company, a bond is a loan that pays interest, and a fund holds many of these in one product. In the Netherlands the main exchange is Euronext Amsterdam, and the AEX index follows 25 of its largest companies.

Most people who invest long term choose funds because they spread money over hundreds of companies. That spreading is called diversification: it reduces the damage when one company fails, but it cannot protect you from a falling market. Every investment can lose value.

Dutch investors can use a bank or an online broker, and can also reach foreign exchanges. Foreign assets add currency and tax questions, which the other guides cover.
